The Feminist Health Fund was founded in January 1980 for the purpose of aiding women with catastrophic illnesses who are economically disadvantaged. Our goal is to continue to raise funds and to distribute them to women in need of immediate financial aid. We are particularly sensitive to the discrimination wornen face due to racism, classism and homophobia. We are not a white, rich women's philanthropy. Members of the board are working women. Some of us are poor, some are professionals, some are married, some are lesbians, some are mothers, all are daughters. Our ages range from the 50's to the 30's. We anticipate getting tax-exempt status soon, and welcome your participation and interest in the Fund. Please write us with your questions, comments, money and love notes at Box 323, Yellow Springs, Ohio 45387.

Tell Them You Saw Their, Ad in What She Wants
Harrison (continued from page 6)
known to depress the system of the baby during such a critical time.)
As birth has become modernized and these practices common, there has been a sharp increase in the rate of Caesarean births due to prolonged labor, the 'mother's fatigue, or, as is often the case, the doctor's fatigue. If the woman complains of severe discomfort, the doctor will often prescribe an epidural or 'other anaesthetic to relieve .her pain: The epidural depresses the mother's muscle system, thus leading to a slowdown in contractions. The resultant slowdown in labor is many times the reason for performing a Caesarean, as labor is followed along a "normal" birth curve allowing two hours for labor and the baby's birth. Once the mother falls out of this curve, she is a prime candidate for a Caesarean, where the baby is delivered by cutting through the mother's ab, dominal and uterine walls. Cutting this muscle carries with it a risk to her bladder, to the cervix and to the further stability of her uterus. And there is the old saying, "Once a Caesarean, always a Caesarean," as there is fear that the uterus would not be strong enough later for a vaginal birth. Doctors have seized control of birth by dehumanizing the mother-she is simply an obstacle between the baby
and doctor, certainly not the star attraction. It is now their delivery.
The disparity between the type of delivery Harrison was being taught to perform and a homebirth where the mother is in control of her body was more than she could deal with, Harrison left the residence program at Beth Israel after seven months. Her belief that she could work within the system to change it was too idealistic. Harrison contends that medicine will change only when the patients themselves demand to be treated as walking, talking, feeling human beings, not as objects requiring attention or as blank checks.
